Women in war-industry: cases from Carniola and Lower Styria
Based merely on the archival material the paper will analyse women’s work in various branches of wartime industry in Carniola and Lower Styria, both parts of nowadays Slovenia. By taking into account pre-war economic development, demographic and migratory trends in the area, the presentation will observe industrial working force in terms of gender, paying a special attention to women. How the war with its needs and shortages influenced the mobilization and fluctuation of the working force? Which branches of industry were most likely to occupy women working force? How mobilization of women was affected by the vicinity of the Isonzo front battle operations? To which degree do serial sources elucidate war time female labour? What can fragmented and incomplete historical sources tell us in regard to the women employees?
